South Korean retailers offer low-price cakes ahead of Christmas

Some are providing discount benefits for pre-orders.

South Korea’s major retailers are releasing a string of low-price cakes ahead of the Christmas and year-end holiday season, as consumers from younger generations slow down their purchases due to high inflation, Korea Bizwire reported.

Shinsegae Food Inc., a food business arm of the country’s retail giant Shinsegae, has started selling two types of $7.67 (KRW9,980) cakes at E-Mart outlets.

Convenience store chain GS25 has also released four types of mini-cakes with prices ranging from $4.54 (KRW5,900) won to $5.00 (KRW6,500), and is also selling two types of whole cakes for $25.40 (KRW33,000).

7-Eleven also joined hands with a custom cake brand to sell a limited number of $22.32 (KRW29,000) mini cakes for one or two people.
