Waterless cosmetics gain traction in APAC amidst growing eco-consciousness

These products will reduce the strain on freshwater supply, according to GlobalData.

Waterless cosmetic products are seeing a rise in demand in Asia Pacific as eco-consciousness amongst consumers grows, according to GlobalData.

The GlobalData 2023 Q2 Consumer Survey which includes over 6,000 respondents in Asia Pacific, showed that 49% of respondents in the region said that information about water footprint displayed on product packaging always/often influences their product choices.

Around 52% of them said that “sustainable” products meant the use of natural resources at a steady level would not damage the environment.

Mohammed Masiuddin Shajie, Lead Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, said waterless beauty products remove water as an ingredient and use alternative bases such as butter, oil, and botanical extracts.

“They are therefore referred to as anhydrous cosmetics,” the analyst said.

“Given the waterless formulation, these products will reduce the strain on freshwater resources. In addition, they will appeal to environmentally conscious consumers, as their smaller pack size will reduce the carbon footprint," Shajie added.

Shajie also said that waterless cosmetics manufacturers should also promote such products as healthier alternatives to traditional beauty products, noting that focusing on the additional aspects will further encourage consumers to buy waterless cosmetics.

“Waterless cosmetics do not need preservatives and are therefore suitable even for sensitive skin types. These beauty products also come with an extended shelf life, while the concentrated nature of these cosmetics makes them convenient for travel and on-the-go application,” the analyst said.
