HSBC names Paul Bloxham Chief Economist Australia and New Zealand

Reserve Bank of Australia experience brings in strong understanding of Australian macroeconomic policy formulation to lender.

HSBC has appointed Paul Bloxham as Chief Economist for Australia and New Zealand, effective immediately. Bloxham joins HSBC from the Reserve Bank of Australia, where he spent 12 years as economist within its Economic Analysis Department, according to an HSBC report.

In his new role, Bloxham will be chief spokesperson for HSBC on forecasts and trends for the Australian and New Zealand economies and their interaction with global financial markets and international economies. He will also be a critical member of the HSBC Global Research team, working with 500 analysts across 87 markets to help formulate HSBC’s unique global view of the world’s economy.

Paulo Maia, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Bank Australia, said: “Paul Bloxham joins HSBC with a strong understanding of Australian macroeconomic policy formulation and comprehensive knowledge of international economic dynamics that affect it.

“As HSBC expands its operations in Australia and cements its position as the leading international bank here, Paul Bloxham will be a significant asset to our business by providing insight into international and domestic economic trends affecting the Australian market and our clients within it.”

As economist within the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Economic Analysis Department, Bloxham headed up the overseas economies and financial conditions sections, as well as working on domestic forecasting and prices. Bloxham has published a number of papers, including on housing and household finances, as well as on asset prices and monetary policy. He holds a Master’s degree in public financial policy from the London School of Economics.

Paul Bloxham replaces John Edwards, who left HSBC to join the Bahrain Economic Development Board. Bloxham will report functionally to Frederic Neumann, Co-head of Asian Economic Research, and locally to Gavin Powell, Head of Global Markets for HSBC in Australia and New Zealand.
