Expedito Garcia Jr., senior vice president and transaction banking and customer engagement group head at Philippine Bank of Communications, is responsible for managing the bank's digital infrastructure and is tasked with developing the strategic road map for technology driven products and services to support the business needs and growth of the bank.

Garcia holds a certificate in international cash management from the Association of Corporate Treasurers in the United Kingdom and has over 28 years of experience working in the Philippine financial services industry handling e-channels and transaction banking initiatives for various institutions.

He will be one of the panelists who will share his insights on digitalisation at the 2017 Asian Banking and Finance Retail Banking Forum Manila on February 15 at the Shangri-La Makati.

ABF: What are your previous experiences and positions held that contributed to who you are as a banker today?
I have had over 28 years of banking experience. I started my career as a branch officer back in the days when most branch processes were still very manual.

This helped me in understanding how various banking transactions were processed and the reasons why certain activities need to be done to ensure proper check and balance. From there, I moved to handling electronic channels and transaction banking requirements.

Having a strong background in branch operations allowed me to easily grasp the processes within these channels and be able to design the necessary check and balances into the electronic transactions thereby balancing efficiency and control in our channels.

My transaction banking exposure, on the other hand, allowed me to understand the funds flow from the client perspective and this again helped us in designing our channels with the requirements of the client in mind.

ABF: What are your key business philosophies?
Service the needs of your clients in the best way imaginable at the least possible cost.
